Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a great profession for individuals interested in learning about other cultures, travel and/or helping others learn a new language. Here and around the world, qualified ESOL instructors are in high demand.
Understanding the Acronyms
Nowadays the field is generally referred to as TESOL. However, there are a variety of other terms that are often used.
ESL = English as a second language (usually taught in an English speaking country like the U.S. or Canada).
EFL = English as a foreign language (usually taught in a country where English is not the native language).
TEFL = Teaching English as a foreign language.
TESL = Teaching English as a second language.
ELL = English language learner

Countries. English Maze and ESL Job Find offer country profiles of English teaching jobs around the world. Find about about salaries, schools, visas, etc.
Jobs. There are many sites that advertise jobs in countries around the world. Some of the most popular ones are: Dave's ESL Cafe, ESLjobs.com, ESL jobs world, ESL base, and ESL Job Find
Bay area schools. You can also find a list of the many English schools in Bay Area cities. Search by city.
Volunteer Teaching. There are many places in the Bay Area where you can help people learn English and gain valuable work experience. Some organizations include the Berkeley YWCA, The Volunteer Center, Back on Track, and Volunteer Match.

CATESOL is the state organization for English language teachers in California. This page offers a large list of resources for teachers. There are also links to jobs, upcoming events, etc.
TESOL Trainers is another consulting agency in Santa Fe run by our colleague, John Kongsvik. This page on his website offers a great collection of websites with a wealth of information about getting jobs abroad.
Free Informational Sessions
Spend an evening with us and experience what a collaborative, communicative ESOL classroom can look like through hands-on activities. If you are interested in teaching ESOL in the US or abroad, this session will give you a taste of what it’s all about. You will also find out more about job opportunities and the many certificate programs in the Bay Area.
